Marathon Instructions - Self-Shuttle

As you already know... There are many ways to self shuttle... This Example is written assuming you have a driver for your car that is not racing.  Use this example to plan your own variations of a shuttle.
1. Racer / Shuttle Driver) You will receive a start time in your email a week before the race. You will want to arrive at the start about hour before your start time as traffic on oak spring road will be heavy an the line can take some time.  Shuttle Driver drops the boat and racer off at the start of the race. Located at Oak Spring Road Canoe Launch, Oak Springs Road, Libertyville. 42.28847411475875, -87.93820843048952 Note, that Oak Spring Road will be a one way street for dropping off boats. Traffic flow will be from East to West. Make sure you have all your equipment well organized beforehand as there is very limited time at the drop off location. (Did you remember your boat, PFD and paddle?)

2. Shuttle Driver...) After dropping your boat off, your shuttle driver can drive your car back to the finish line Lots A, B, C. Just note driving using the tollway will take about 30 minutes to get from the Start line to lots A, B, and C.

On the way to lots A, B, C your shuttle driver can stop at various point of the river to see the race.

There is No Parking directly at the Finish Line but parking is available at the nearby lots A, B, C. Park in lot A. Once lot A is filled, park in lot B, once lot B is filled park in Lot C.
Refer to the following map for parking lot A, B, and C locations.
Because there is no parking at the finish line. Your shuttle driver can walk or take the local shuttle bus back to the finish line area. The local shuttle bus starts running at 10:15AM. Verify with the driver that they are stopping at the Finish line before going to the start. At request on the earlier buses the drivers will stop at the Finish Line before heading to the start.

3. Dropped off Racer at the Start) After arriving at the start line, pick up your race packet and number at the registration tent. Apply your numbers to a clean area on the upper left and upper right sides of the front of the craft.  The numbers must be visible from both riverbanks.  Please do not have any other race numbers visible.

Note: Boats that have missed their official start must check in with the starter; otherwise, they will be disqualified.  All late starts will use their assigned starting time, unless reassigned a new time and boat number at the registration table.

4.) Make your final boat preparations and launch your boat. You will want to have your boat in the water about 20 minutes before your start time. While in the water you might want to paddle upstream for quick warm up. You can go to the side of the river with slow the current and wait for your number to be announced to line up at the start line.

5.) Have a great race and see you at the finish line! R.A.C.E.S. (Amateur Radio) volunteers will be at several points along the river. They will check your boat number as you go past. You can shout out your boat number to them when you see them as it can be hard for them to see your numbers.  R.A.C.E.S will be monitoring the weather as the race is underway. If a severe weather warning is issued, R.A.C.E.S. officials at the bridges will require participants to get off the river. If the weather allows safe return to the water, the race can be completed.  The total elapsed time, including any delay, will be used for award purposes. R.A.C.E.S will also help with Emergency communications that will be available at various locations along the race course.  If for any reason you must quit the race please notify a race official.

?6.) After you pass the finish line and get your most amazing time recorded for the race, race volunteers will help you get your boat to the boat coral. Pick up your t-shirt and race patch from the t-shirt tent. Join the the post race party, there will be vendors, a food truck, and band at the finish line. Race results will be posted to a board. The awards ceremony will be at 2:00PM, located at the finish line party on the band stage.

7. Racer / Shuttle Driver) After you enjoyed the party, hop on a free shuttle to lots A, B or C and pick up your car. Drive to the finish line where you can momentarily park at Dam 2  42.083685, -87.892041 to load your boat on your car. If your shuttle driver did not wait for you at the Finish Line party you can call them to have them pick you and your boat up at the Finish Line. If you want to stay longer you will have to move your car back to lots A, B, or C. and take the shuttle back to the finish line party.

8.) Thanks for coming to the race and we hope you had a great time!! See you next year!!! Had way too much fun? Check out these other local races.
