Literary Caucuses

If you are a caucus organizer who would like to update your information below, please send updates to events@awpwriter.org.

AWP is proud to support the vibrant literary caucuses working to meet the needs of the world’s diverse population of writers. Every year, AWP makes space available for caucuses to meet at our annual conference, where all conference attendees, regardless of affiliation, are welcome to attend. Please find below a list of literary caucuses that have attended our conference, along with contact information and links to caucus websites.

These caucuses are freestanding groups, each made up of a specific demographic that shares academic, literary, and professional development concerns. The views and opinions expressed by the caucuses do not necessarily reflect the views of the AWP Board of Directors or staff.

All caucuses holding meetings at the annual AWP Conference & Bookfair are required to follow the conference caucus presenter guidelines.

Latinx Writers Caucus

Latinx writers are becoming increasingly visible in literary spaces. However, there is still work to be done to address inequalities in access, leadership, and visibility. The Latinx Writers Caucus creates space for new, emerging, and established writers of varied Latinx identities to network, reduce isolation, build community, and discuss urgent topics in Latinx literature such as war, undocumented migration, and racial/economic/disability/gender/sexual justice.

Latinx writers constitute a complex demographic that shares unique political and professional concerns and that benefits from the institutional space of a caucus. Historically, issues of erasure, active oppression, and marginalization have challenged Latinx members of the literary community. The presence of the Latinx Writers Caucus helps provide a network of support and opportunities for connection to new, emerging, and established Latinx writers at AWP. This convergence allows for horizontal mentorship and support across the Latinx literary community.

LGBTQ Writers Caucus

The LGBTQ Writers Caucus provides a space for writers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer to network and discuss common issues and challenges, such as representation and visibility on and off the literary page, and how to incorporate one’s personal identity into their professional and academic lives. The caucus also strives to discuss, develop, and increase queer representation for future AWP conferences and serve as a supportive community and resource for its members.

Pan-African Diaspora Caucus

The Pan-African Diaspora Caucus is a safe gathering space for Black writers who are creating and advocating for excellence, craft, and the overall future of Black writing. We strive to unite and uplift any Black writer who is feeling creatively isolated or unsupported by grounding them in a feeling of collective imagination and artistic exchange. In this current climate while universities, libraries, museums, and historically Black spaces are under attack by our federal and local governments, it is more important than ever to champion this cause. Defending and upholding our right to build community while furthering our art is critical at this time and has been since our predecessors have shown us the path of resistance. We will continue to fight for our own place in the literary world and are happy to be a vital part of the AWP community.
