Justice Strategies in Two-Years
This project investigated the social communicative behaviors of infant siblings of children with ASD (“at-risk”) during infant/parent interactions at home as compared to infant siblings of typically developing children (“low-risk”). RVR PDVD and the Classroom
Auditory-steady-state-response (ASSR) repetition-rate profiles were determined in primary-school-aged children and young adults over a wide range of modulation frequencies, namely the general ranges embracing the traditionally measured transient AEPs ([obligatory] auditory evoked potentials of all latencies). Effects of repetition rate, maturation and natural sleep on response harmonic structure are reported.

Smack Dab in the Middle: Digital Best Practices
Preschoolers with complex communication needs demonstrate severe speech impairments and delayed expressive language. SLPs often use multimodality AAC to facilitate both communication skills and vocabulary production. This presentation compares the effectiveness of two evidence-based language intervention approaches towards facilitating vocabulary production in preschoolers benefitting from multimodality AAC.

Smack Dab in the Middle: Digital Literacy Best Practices
Young children with severe communication difficulties may use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as a means to develop language. However, children who use AAC often demonstrate difficulties with early vocabulary production. Active Learning Spaces for your Digital School
This study investigated the effect of the addition of gestures to phonological and semantic cueing treatments in four aphasic adults. The results suggested that the efficacy of cueing procedures is highly variable. For some subjects, the inclusion of gesture in both phonological and semantic treatments lead to more rapid improvements.

A Business Operation Plan: What’s a BOP?
SBA has the responsibility to assign a Procurement Center Representative (PCR) to major federal Offices of Procurement. As each federal agency, in addition to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), may have supplemental acquisition policies, it is important that the PCRs assigned, (who may have multiple and varied agencies in which to provide oversight and support), have a Business Operations Plan to support their efforts in assisting the procurement centers (PC) in providing the maximum practicable opportunity to small business concerns to achieve their mission. Therefore, it is necessary that the PCR, as an independent agent of the SBA, be provided authority and responsibility that is commensurate with the position and be responsible for developing and implementing a BOP for each assigned PC.

Auditory Long Latency Responses Recorded During Speech Production
This study examines speech-language professionals' (SLPs) perceptions of oral motor efficacy (OME) in treating speech sound disorders (SSDs). A survey was completed by SLPs that included individuals with bachelor's and master's degree. The vast majority of respondents stated that they use OME and perceive it to be effective.

Canvas-Blended and New Approaches to PD
We examined the use of symbolic schemes in 20 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) preterm infants, 20 Down syndrome (DS), and 20 typically developing infants, during a 6-month period. VLBW preterm and DS children presented slower rhythm of development, and the former also presented specific difficulties concerning symbolic schemes performed on non-figurative objects.

Mitigating Student Caused Damage to Devices
Effects on voice production following a minimum seven-hour period of no-fluid intake were examined in 40 singers and non-singers. Objective and subjective measures of interest include jitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency, pitch range, and voice quality ratings. Differences between the “hydrated” and “low hydration” assessments are discussed with clinical implications.

Language sample analysis is fundamental for the evaluation of children with language impairments. Grammatical morphemes are one measurement of analysis. Roger Brown (1973) concluded normative data on the emergence of grammatical morphemes. The sociable behaviors of children with specific language impairment (SLI), nonspecific language impairment (NLI), and typically developing language skills were examined. The groups with language impairment were rated as demonstrating poorer sociable behavior than the typical group. The groups with LI did not differ from each other.

Creative Tools for Teachers and Kids
Priming influences episodic memory, information processing, and expressive language and may affect spontaneous communication in children with autism spectrum disorders. Visual inspection of a multi-element design and statistical analysis indicated that priming was highly effective for increasing verbal comments for two of three participants. Cybersecurity Task Force: Cybersecurity in an age of digital learning
Three CNAs predicted frequency of use and effectiveness of ten communication strategies. Actual use of the strategies was measured during two activities. All ten communication strategies were judged to be “frequently-always” used. Effectiveness of strategies was reported to be “somewhat-very much” effective. However, only seven strategies were actually used.

Indiana Tech Trends 2019
This study examines the relationship between teacher expectations for attainment of higher education and teacher ratings of language/ literacy skills among African-American schoolchildren. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed. Teachers’ expectations were based upon student characteristics including: gender, SES, classroom performance, and language/literacy skills. Implications and future research are discussed.

Easy to Integrate Technology - More Creative and Engaging: Teacher Toolbox
The purpose was to investigate learning generalization of temporal processing in children with dyslexia. The frequency order training was applied and its effect was analyzed in a different task (duration order). Using the FileWave API to Manage Workflows
Thickening liquids is a commonly used dysphagia treatment. In 2008, the largest multi-site randomized clinical trial in dysphagia reported conflicting outcomes regarding the short- and long-term effectiveness of two levels of thickened liquids (nectar-300cP and honey-3000cP). Average airflow measurements were gathered from 30 children, ages 4:0 to 5:11 years. What’s New from Apple and Pear
Clinical tools are beneficial for determining typical versus atypical cognitive processing speed, but can one increase cognitive speed? Two normal elderly adults participated in a 1-week program involving oral reading and one participant served as the benchmark. Effects of exposure to oral reading on cognitive processing speed will be discussed.

ABCE Come and Go in Running Analytics
We report findings from studies of 40 children, adolescents, and adults with apraxia of speech in neurodevelopmental, neurologic, and idiopathic contexts. Findings indicate lack of specificity for many proposed markers of CAS in children, but support the diagnostic accuracy of an emerging set of speech, prosody, and voice indices.

ABCE Come and Go - VR/AR in the Classroom
Funding: ASHFoundation.In a pilot sample of families with speech sound disorders, genetic influences were evaluated with novel hypotheses involving a candidate gene for core traits (CNTNAP2), a candidate phenotype (slowed motor speeds), and a candidate region for that phenotype (6p22). Results motivate a revised diagnostic framework and therapy-related questions.

Field Museum Behind the Scenes!
Located on Chicago’s iconic Lake Michigan shore, the Field Museum opened its current building to the public in 1921—but our story began years earlier.
Our collection grew out of items on display in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in the “White City.” The exposition delighted visitors with 65,000 exhibits filled with natural wonders and cultural artifacts, many of which later found a permanent home in Chicago at the newly created Field Columbian Museum. Our museum name still honors Marshall Field, who donated $1 million to make the collective dream of a permanent museum a reality.  Location: |
