A Logical Approach To GDI Driveability Concerns
The course objective is to first, take the novice driveability tech and offer insight as to how fuel injection strategy functions. After thorough discussion of what critical inputs are necessary and how they contribute to the decision of the proper fuel injector pulse-width, interactive class exercises will begin. Using a vehicle with a MAF fueling strategy, a series of experiments were conducted to create a low-power driveability fault. The faults include: -exhaust restriction -Air Filter restriction -Fuel restriction -un-metered air before throttle plate -un-metered air after throttle (vacuum)

Transmission Diagnostics for Non-Tranmission Technicians
Don’t ship the vehicle, keep it in house! Diagnostic technicians, use your scope skills to diagnose transmission problems. You might be surprised how many transmission issues can be resolved without major transmission overhaul. This is a practical “how to do” type of class that outlines a logical process for attacking transmission failures using tools and techniques that driveability technicians already possess. Scott Shotton explains how to use your diagnostic skills to determine the cause of a transmission problem: - engine problem - electrical problem - internal transmission issue An awesome Diagnostic flow chart is included in the PDF manual to help guide you through the process!

Ford IDS and FDRS
The venerable Next Generation Star (Ford Handheld Scanner) was phased out almost 20 years ago. Its replacement was the laptop-based Integrated Diagnostic System or IDS which was introduced to dealers in 2005. It has been a stalwart of Ford vehicle diagnosis for Ford/Lincoln vehicles from 1996 to roughly 2019. It is power packed with features that reduce diagnostic time like Module Programming, Power Balance, Relative Compression, Automated Fuel System and Evaporative Emissions testing. Many shops have yet to embrace this affordable and efficient tool. Ford Diagnostic & Repair System (FDRS) – This is the next generation factory Ford Motor Company vehicle diagnostic Software designed for use with VCM II or VCM III, VCMM and J2534 compatible Vehicle Communications Interfaces (VCI). This is the replacement for the IDS. The major difference is that FDRS is internet cloud based. It has many of the same powerful features of IDS but with other improvements. This class will investigate both IDS and FDRS strengths and weaknesses. Features will be discussed, and their advantages to speeding up the diagnostic process. Hardware, software, licenses and interfaces will be investigated. Real world case studies will be used as examples.

ADAS - Mastering Profitability and Delivering Safe Repairs
(4 hours only) Did you know that a Smart Cruise Control Radar Alignment is required after replacing or adjusting the steering angle sensor on a 2019 Kia Cadenza? Or that a Lane Departure Warning Camera calibration is required when replacing the transmission on a 2020 Ford Transit? Often determining when a calibration is required can be more challenging than performing the calibration itself. In this course which is suited for service writers, management, and technicians alike, we will take a deep dive into the follow-up procedures required during many common services. We will cover programming, coding, calibrations, and setup procedures including but not limited to ADAS calibrations. Using this information we will discuss tips on making these services profitable while still delivering safe repairs. (8 Hour Version) + Would you prefer plenty of profit or plenty of liability? We will discuss how many of these calibrations are integral to many repair procedures being performed at many repair shops and are often overlooked. We will demonstrate how to determine what services are required for most American, Asian, and European manufacturers. We will cover the Captured Calibrations process and take an in-depth look at strategies for determining what follow up services are required in real time.

Service Advisor Workshop: Building Customer Relationships
Our industry has changed drastically, and what we did in the past does not work today. Our clients are looking for more transparency and better communication through digital platforms. By properly communicating their needs in-person, on the telephone, or through digital media (such as text, email, and digital vehicle inspections), we are building trusting client relationships. Don't give your customers a reason to use Google to get information about their vehicle; YOU are the expert! Seminar Takeaways: • Build a relationship with your customers • Speak and write like a consumer instead of a technician • Enhance your telephone and face-to-face skills • Use six steps to build the foundation of a trusting relationship • Learn how to convert the price-shopper

The Art of Advising with Digital Vehicle Inspections
Our job titles as Service Advisors and Service Consultants are not euphemisms. These titles accurately describe our professional responsibility to our clients. While Digital Vehicle Inspections makes it simple for us to own these titles- this course is not about the technology - it is our communication skills and relationship with our clients that take center stage! In this course, we’re aiming straight to the heart of professional service advising with digital inspections. Attendees will learn a proven process worthy of greater consistency and emerge equipped to leverage inspections in a way that secures wins for their business, their staff, and their clients. For many shops - the DVI is a tool that is leveraged during the first part of an approval process- but here we'll go further and steer conversations around the DVI to manage vehicles in a relational business model in today's rapidly changing evolving technology landscape. Attendees using any of today's DVI tools will be able to apply the strategies discussed in this course. This is a great learning opportunity for the whole team as it provides insight into the full benefits of a well-implemented inspection process. Topics Include: – Reinforcing why we inspect vehicles – Case studies on successful and struggling inspection process and tactics – Setting expectations early with relational advising strategies – When and how to send quality DVI’s – Techniques to ensure inspections are viewed (and why this matters) – Leveraging inspections in the approval call – Consulting for the next visit based on Inspections

Use Your SMS to Sell More Jobs - Here’s How
Your SMS captures all kinds of data about your business - but how often do you use that information to drive your choices? This session will teach you how to unlock the power of the metrics within your SMS and show you how to leverage that data to make smarter business decisions. Whether you're looking to increase your ARO or car count, streamline technician efficiency, or just sleep better at night, this session will help you achieve your goals with data you already have but maybe aren't quite sure how to interpret. 1. Attendees will learn what metrics their SMS captures and how to interpret them, including which metrics are most important to track to achieve different goals. 2. Attendees will then learn how to use that data to drive decision-making, applying what they've learned to their goal-setting and KPI tracking processes. 3. Attendees will leave with a fuller understanding of the language of business analytics and feel confident navigating their SMS tool to find their preferred reports (or asking for help from their vendor).

It Starts With A Spark
A comprehensive guide to successful ignition waveform analysis. This testing and analytical technique has been lost over the years with the advent of recent technologies. The point of ignition is not as easily accessible. However, physics will never change, making ignition waveform acquisition and analysis highly applicable and sought after. Application of tools and testing techniques will be demonstrated through case study presentation of different varieties, and the class is designed to be highly interactive with class attendees. The object of the class is to create an environment for learning that boosts confidence. This will lead to accuracy and efficiency. Students will leave the class with a solid understanding of how ignition systems function in general and what is involved in creating the spark between the plug electrodes. They will gain confidence in the acquisition process to invest in the appropriate tooling and learn how to implement the tools on known- good vehicles. They will leave the class with the knowledge of how to practice and experiment safely while gaining the confidence to incorporate these techniques into their existing diagnostic process, eventually replacing time-consuming techniques with ignition waveform acquisition and analysis. These testing techniques can be applied to any vehicle with spark ignition. The class will incorporate all aspects of ignition analysis, including: -Theory and operation -Physics involved (digestible stuff…applicable information) -Proper tooling -Scope Set-up -Raster/Paraded/Single waveform analysis -primary voltage/amperage -Secondary kV -Carbon issues/GDI -Waveform capture and storage -Snap-throttle testing -Ignition timing importance -Proper analytic technique

Designing an EV Curriculum for Secondary and Post-Secondary Schools
EV technology is demanding a different type of future technician in the automotive industry. Many schools are looking to add EV to their automotive programs preparing the students for success in this field. I am the lead instructor of the Electric and Autonomous Vehicle Degree Program at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. We have designed a program that allows the students in the program to receive an associates degree in electric and autonomous vehicle technology. Looking for where to start your program, I’d be happy to share some of the information I have as far as what has worked for me and what has not worked so well.

Help Me Teach All Things Electrical! – an Electricity Workshop
The Vision Educator Think Tank (ETT) always offers an opportunity for automotive instructors to gain resources that can be used directly in their own classrooms. We all know that basic electrical skills are the hardest and most critical to teach but we also know from advisory committee input that a strong electrical foundation is absolutely needed in our students. Attendees to this workshop will be participating in a journey from the student perspective, exploring how they see “electricity” in order to analyze the hurdles of teaching them electricity, electronics or even the new EV concept. We will have multiple learning stations where attendees will work together with each other to design and create classroom and lab lessons that will help our students get that foundation! So, if you are new to teaching or have many years of experience to offer, plan to attend this workshop and contribute your skills to creating lessons that can be presented to the next generation technicians. *bring a laptop for digital capture of lessons 4.0 hour session

How to Teach Ignition System Analyzing and Understanding the Waveform
Using Ignition waveforms to determine driveability problems. In this presentation, Jim from Morton’s Automotive Technical Services will show the Educators all the valuable information there is in an ignition waveform, both primary and secondary. Jim feels this is becoming a dying art due to the fact of the problems and cost of secondary adapters. Also, most techs that try to use this information only know and use the firing KV and maybe the burntime. There is an unbelievable amount of information in the Spark KV, Dwell and the condenser/coil oscillation areas. Join us and look at what the ignition pattern is trying to us.

The Battery Class
As our industry embraces electrification, requiring technical instruction on lithium-ion batteries, it might be useful to take a step back and revisit the way in which we teach our beginning students about batteries in general, starting with lead-acid batteries. A deeper, more fundamental introduction to conventional and advanced lead-acid technology can set the stage for a greater understanding of EV/hybrid battery technology later on (nickel-metal hydride, lithium-ion) and supporting subjects (battery management systems, battery diagnostics). We will keep the chemistry talk to a minimum; just enough to get the job done.

Daily Diagnostics with HP Tuners
It is a well-known fact that vehicle diagnostics today are full of challenges for everyday technicians. The currently available scan tool options do a good job of providing most of what is needed regarding scan data parameters. But what if we could go even further than most scan tools allow already? And what if that option was an extremely affordable option for everyone? These are some of the reasons we decided to use a tool from HP Tuners, known as the MPVI, and focus on the strengths and advantages that the VCM Scanner application can bring to the everyday diagnostic technicians’ workflow. Viewing powertrain scan data and comparing operating parameters takes on a completely new experience, with the ability to view numerical and graphed data in ways that is unmatched in other scan tool offerings today. Bidirectional controls and service functions for both engine and transmission are available for many vehicle applications as well. With a few simple clicks, connecting to a vehicle to view emissions related DTCs and current OBD monitor status will save a lot of diagnostic time. In this course, we will discuss how to integrate this tool into your diagnostic routine using the following, and even more, strengths of the VCM Scanner software: • Easily create/save custom data lists • Standalone datalogging for test drives • Channels, charts, Graph vs Time, and Gauge customizing • Incredibly fast data update rate • Using Markers for intermittent concerns • Custom channels to use external inputs This course is intended to create a whole new look at driveability diagnostics that we’ve never been able to see before. We will also introduce the VCM Editor software for a further understanding of how a module makes the decisions that it does. This course is intended for A and B level technicians.

An Introduction to Alignment Confidence
Alignment services present enormous potential as a profit center for your business. They also raise some questions. An introduction to Alignment confidence is about helping Shop owners and Technicians make sense of the opportunities as well as the challenges associated with Alignment work on today’s light duty cars and trucks. From misunderstanding the implications of warning messages, outsourcing, angles being out of specification, and rusted nuts and bolts, to the importance of properly functioning ADAS systems, there are plenty of things to think about involved with modern Alignment services. Let’s talk through some of these foundational ideas, share with you some fantastic resources on an alignment machine that you may not even realize you already have access to, and help you form your own opinion about what strategy is going to be best for you and your shop.

Diagnosing Steering and Suspension Systems from A to Z
This clinic enhances the skills of the professional undercar technician in the areas of mechanical and electronic steering and suspension systems. We discuss proper component inspection procedures on today’s popular suspension and steering systems. Vehicle diagnostic strategies revolving around ride quality and handling issues are a focus with an emphasis on electronic shocks and air springs used on vehicles with ECS (Electronically Controlled Suspension). A description, operation and diagnostic segment on electric steer vehicles is included. Integration of these components within modern day safety systems result in special wheel alignment procedures after ‘hard part’ replacement. We discuss how to perform this service the ‘right way’ to restore proper vehicle handling and control. Calibrating various steering and suspension components after replacement is highlighted. After completing this clinic, the student will have the knowledge to: • Relate worn chassis components to accelerated tire wear and inadequate steering, stopping and stability • Define the operation of electronically assisted steering systems (column drive, rack motor drive, belt drive) • Validate performance of steering and suspension components on ECS equipped vehicles • Understand the function and calibration needs of the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) within various vehicle safety systems • Recognize scan tool functional tests, data stream interpretation and output controls to complete electronic steering and suspension service procedures

Domestic Programming
Everyone must deal with programming, and even if you don't do it, you are subletting to mobile, remote or dealer services. Therefore, we created this seminar to help you become a better programmer or to become a better programming customer. Successful programming and setup require a skilled programmer, but also a shop that has properly diagnosed the vehicle and has it in the correct condition for programming. The benefits for everyone include more accurate quotes, better customer expectation management, getting the vehicle back on the road faster, and avoiding the time and money involved in multiple attempts. Some programming is as simple as following instructions, but there are many exceptions, including transmission solenoid strategies, the used module problem, and a million variations for clusters, radios, differentials, steering, and everything else! Other skills include: • Understanding tooling & subscription options • Identifying information sources for calibrations, programming sequences, and other requirements • Knowing how to set up for successful programming (e.g. old module available, label numbers, programming/learning sequence etc.) • Implementing backup plans for failed or forced programming • Understanding the need for documented & undocumented post-programming procedures This seminar and manual were built in the field, so they are based on the actual (not published) procedures, including examples of working around failures and challenges.

Duramax L5P Diesel Engine & Aftertreatment Diagnostics
The 2017 & newer Duramax L5P and the related L5D are a huge improvement over LML, LGH and earlier generation Duramax applications. However, service information is even worse! It’s not so much ‘terrible’ as ‘nonexistent’. This creates unique challenges for diesels because the aftertreatment systems cannot work if there are even subtle base engine or engine management faults, so the path from ‘code’ to ‘cause’ is very fuzzy. The L5P also signaled a shift from Bosch to DENSO fuel systems, the addition of a brushless low pressure pump, the move to an electronically-controlled turbocharger, and many more changes. These are significant engine management differences that just aren’t explained. To help you out, we’ve collected the specific ways that these new systems fail and offer lots of known good data and field-proven test procedures to diagnose them. Specifically, attendees will be able to: • Sort through the EGR, DPF, DOC & SCR faults and determine the root cause, even if it’s a breathing or fueling fault or other ‘upstream’ issue • Locate boosted duct leaks and measurement fault, including the ‘leak PID’ and MAP clogging issues • Understand how sensor faults cause misleading injector timing and volume codes • Identify erratically named Duramax L5P sensors • Determine hard-start and no-start root causes • Apply post-repair relearns and system tests The seminar will help you make a better possible cause list and show you simple tests to trim that list without taking too much apart. We’ve also created graphics that are missing from service information for the intake, fuel and emissions systems that show the ‘real’ component locations and flow through systems. This seminar is what you need to win against these diesels.

Electronification of the Chassis (A Step into Autonomous Vehicles)
With the electronification of the chassis, understanding of the OE design across multiple systems has become even more important in daily shop repairs. This class presents the correlation between those systems and electro-mechanical parts. ADAS, electronic shock, Smart chassis, electronic steering are all new terms that shops need to be aware of and be able to properly diagnose. 4-wheel steer, another new but old term that is not introduced in the market once again. What makes this class important for a technician is the ability to leave with an understanding of how these changes influence the design of parts and knowledge of fault codes to properly diagnose daily needed repairs.

Essential Scan Tool Techniques
SOLD OUT
Vehicle manufacturers spend so much effort creating PIDs and Scan Tool functions that are almost never used. There’s no reference to most of them in flow charts, and definitions are almost impossible to find. We’re left to fend for ourselves, but we have assembled some great solutions for choosing PIDs and controls, interpreting results, and determining units and meaning when it makes no sense. Maybe more importantly, with High Level Indicators as a foundation, you can quickly move most PIDs into our favorite new category of ‘true but useless’. Quickly eliminating the dumb stuff really helps clear your head during diagnosis. As Sherlock Holmes stated, “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth”. He would have been a great tech. Coverage includes: • When Generic PIDs are better • The case for limited Mode $06 • Managing customer expectations during layered repairs • High Level Indicator techniques & practice • Detailed PID comparison tables • Using wiring diagrams to determine what PIDs really mean • Lots of examples! This seminar and manual were built by analyzing everyday diagnostics to find the best way to leverage PIDs, controls and code definitions. This path is rarely the same as the published flow chart and is almost always a lot shorter. Whether you’re just starting in diagnostics or have decades of experience, you’ll find something practical that can be applied immediately.

Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Engine Performance & Emissions
SOLD OUT
The basic idea of the diesel engine hasn’t changed in over 100 years, but like gasoline engines, advanced engine management and emissions systems have been added. Diesel systems are more integrated and depend on each other more than gasoline systems, and the 6.7L Powerstroke is no exception. However, available diagnostic information hasn’t kept up, and focuses on long test sequences that often ignore possible causes in related systems. ATG seminars are built from the ‘shop up’ instead of simply trimming down OEM information, so all of the information is developed and tested during real-world diagnostics. System, code, and symptom coverage includes: • DPF regeneration tips • SCR and related component diagnostics • Production changes & backwards compatibility • Strategies for low boost & breathing MAF, MAP & TP correlation codes • False HP fuel system codes • Best locations to find a failed fuel system • DualBoost single turbocharger • EGR, VGT Turbo & Throttle Plate relationships • Simplified no-start & hard-start diagnostics • Homemade tools for a variety of procedures • Tips for avoiding EGR bolt breakage • Common mistakes to avoid during repairs This manual and seminar cover the ‘inside information’ you need to avoid testing the long way when flow charts are available, and completely guessing when they aren’t. Our approach looks for high-level indicators to make a better possible-cause list, and then offers multiple simple tests to trim that list as fast as possible without taking too much apart.

Hybrid and EV - Drivetrain
In hybrid and electric vehicles, the Motor–Generator converts electrical power to mechanical power (and vice/versa). In essence, the motor uses electricity whereas the generator produces electricity. Through a process known as regenerative braking, the generator transfers otherwise wasted energy created by the rotating wheel while braking back to the battery pack. The motor then uses power from this high-capacity battery pack to drive the vehicle’s wheels. Throughout this course, participants will be introduced to the operation of the Motor-Generator, Inverter/Powertrain and Resolvers. While some of the traditional methods are still valid, Technicians will learn essential new skills and tools needed to service Hybrid and Electric vehicles. Meg-ohmmeter and milli-ohmmeters are two of the tools used when diagnosing faults within the motor generator windings and the high-voltage cables that supply the voltage for the motor generators. Diagnostic procedures will be investigated using Scan Tools, Milli-ohmmeters, Mega-Ohmmeter and DVOMs to detect and resolve fault issues. Recommended for A and B level technicians. Inverter/Powertrain • Component Construction & Operation • Transmission Operation and Fluid Issues • IGBT Transistor • Inverter Cooling • Scan Tool PID Interpretation & Diagnostics • Diagnosis of a Faulty Inverter Motor-Generator • Component Construction & Operation, Motor-Generator, cables • Motor-Generator Cooling • Scan Tool PID Interpretation & Diagnostics Testing Motor Stator Milli-ohmmeter • Testing Motor Stator using Resistance and Voltage • Testing HV Cables, Insulation Testing using the DVOM tool • Diagnosis of a Faulty Motor-Generator Resolvers • Component Construction & Operation • Scan Tool PID Interpretation & Diagnostics • Scope Resolver 3 signals • Resolver Removal, Installation and Set-up • Diagnosis of a Faulty Resolver Sensor Code

Hybrid Systems Diagnostics
Vehicle coverage includes examples from Honda, Toyota, Ford, BMW, Hyundai/KIA, General Motors, and more. There are now over 100 hybrid models on our roads, but our captures and case studies cover the limited number of configurations used. After this seminar, you’ll be able to recognize the systems and components even when working on one of the dozens of low-production hybrids. Using these skills, you can approach a common hybrid or a model you’ve never seen and easily identify components, functions, and interactions. Better still, you’ll be able to select the appropriate test from our manual to avoid guessing when available repair information is confusing (or nonexistent). Specific topics include: • An Intuitive understanding of power sharing • Drive motor types & feedback, including BAS, planetary, 2-mode, flywheel, clutched EV, etc. • Battery stress-testing w/ failure examples • High voltage battery faults vs. voltage drop • ICE faults and test variations vs. non-hybrid • Understanding the braking/regeneration mix • Testing air, coolant and refrigerant cooling for batteries, motors, engines & electronics • Lots of auxiliary tests for fans, pumps, HVAC, plug-plugin-charging, brakes, instrumentation, etc. • Cool circuit tests not listed in OEM information For each discussion, we focus on the high-level thought process to help you rule out entire categories of faults. Finding out what’s not wrong prevents wasted tests and the distractions that lead to misdiagnosis. Bringing this ideology to hybrid diagnostics makes sense because the complexity of the drivetrain and auxiliary systems means that mistakes cost a lot of time and money. After this seminar you’ll have confidence when the next hybrid rolls in, no matter who Made it!

Misfire Diagnosis
Many technicians have approached misfire diagnosis by swapping ignition coils or other components between cylinders. Access to these components is challenging on many vehicles, therefore, this technique can be ineffective. This class will identify requirements for combustion to occur such as fuel delivery, ignition, and engine mechanical operation. Then, we will explore various techniques to effectively identify the cause of an engine misfire using scan data and oscilloscope waveform analysis. Case studies will be used to demonstrate these techniques. After completing this class, a technician will be able to: • Describe basic combustion principles • Analyze scan tool data • Verify ECM commands for ignition and fuel • Interpret oscilloscope waveforms for misfire diagnosis • Evaluate relative compression results

Tesla Service Essentials
A Tesla may be an EV with some peculiar differences from the other vehicles we work on every day, but there are quite a few similarities as well. It still has hydraulic brakes, rubber tires, and a 12-volt system that does virtually everything that doesn’t provide the electrical power to propel the vehicle. In a word, if you’re already servicing hybrids and other EVs, Teslas aren’t much different; that being said, there are some things that technicians need to learn if they are going to perform essential services on these vehicles. There will be over 2.5 million Teslas on the road as of late 2021; if your shop isn’t ready to handle them, now is the time to turn this issue into an opportunity. Recommended for all levels of technicians • Safety practices • Electrical procedures • High voltage disconnects • Service mode • Proper lifting procedures • Tesla service information & diagnostic software • Cooling the battery and powertrain • Service reminders • 12V battery replacement • Tesla differences with: o Brakes o Tires o Steering and suspension o Alignment o Headlights o Climate control

Diagnostics 101
Diagnostics #101 Baseline System Testing This class uses the Quick Things First testing procedures to check for proper system testing. Using tools that most shops already have will form a diagnostic foundational procedure. Test procedures will baseline the vehicle for repair or point in a direct for more testing. Systems evaluated: • Battery/Charging/Starting • Compression/Engine Condition • Fuel Pump/Fuel Injectors • Ignition • Computer Tools used are scan tool, compression gauge, vacuum gauge, and Lab scope. This is the procedure to find out if we have any problems with the basic functions of the vehicle. We need to set a base line of the condition of the engine compression, Fuel pressure and volume, Electrical system, and computer functions. This class is for the new techs and those who want a review.
