Concessions Conundrum: Flat Fee, Percentage, and Everything in Between
Is a flat fee the safer bet, or does a percentage model offer more potential? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. In this collaborative panel, hear from a concessions manager, a fair manager, a concessions auditor, and a veteran vendor who works both pricing models. Together, they’ll dive into what really influences these decisions: rising costs, increased fees, and the impact on fairgoers. Walk away with insight to help you evaluate what’s right for your fair, and how to build stronger, more successful vendor relationships along the way.

Zone 2 Meeting
The IAFE has eight geographic Zones established for board governance reasons - each Zone elects a director to serve a 3-year term (elections happen in different Zones in different years). The Zone meeting held during the Convention is considered the Annual Business Meeting of the Zone. Members of any type are welcome to attend but business items, including voting, can only be done by a designated individual representing a member fair or state/provincial association. In addition to the official business to be conducted, Zone meetings are great opportunities to network with fairs from the same region. Location: 405/406/407, Colorado Convention Center |

Cultivating Connections: Communicating Agriculture to Non-Ag Audiences
County and State Fairs are some of the best venues to share about agriculture with a non-ag audience and are truly an intersection of urban and rural. However, how we communicate about agriculture matters, and understanding what a non-ag audience is looking to learn and how they best receive information is key. In this talk, we’ll look at the most recent research about what matters to consumers and who they trust when it comes to agriculture, which messages resonate the most, and how to share them in a way that’s not only effective but opens the door to dialogue and relationship-building.

Everyone Loves A (SAFE) Parade
The first challenge for many parade organizers is to accept that there are risks to mitigate. One might ask, ‘Parades move so slowly, what could go wrong?’ In this session, we will try not to get too agitated as we discuss the combustible combination of pedestrians walking close to moving vehicles, people throwing stuff at spectators, no security perimeters, children, animals, weather, and people doing things they would never do any other time. Then, applying the new American National Standard for parade safety, ANSI ES1.42-2025, we will discuss how to mitigate the risks in our parade of horribles.

Dollars and “Sense”
Dollars and “Sense”…that is what we are all talking about! How many do we need? Why do we need so many? How much is enough? Get it while you can! Be cautious, don’t spend right now! How do we take the OUCH out and bring VALUE back? Some of the concepts flying around are inflation, tariffs, price increases, promotions, sales tax, fees, cashless, bottom line, group buying, net profit, tipping, cash only, dynamic pricing, making change, flat fee rent, and prevailing wage. Our Events must provide revenue to our organizations and business and at the same time create Happy, Highly Satisfied guests who will return. It takes Dollars and “Sense” to do that! Successfully Managing by Walking Around with EYES that See!
Discuss the concept of Change Blindness and how it affects “Management by Walking Around” (MBWA). In Fair Management, being present in the field is a difficult task because of the important responsibilities and the quick pace of each day. We will discover ways to be present with so many “to dos” and “fires to put out”! Participate in an activity in which you will be exposed to variable conditions that occur while walking their areas of responsibility. Learning to go from “looking” to actually “seeing” the team in action so they can both reward and recognize the positive performance or coach undesirable performance of their team. This session will include training tips on teaching this back at your organization.

Wagons & Whiskey Fundraiser
Get ready for a one-of-a-kind fundraising night during the IAFE Convention on Sunday, November 30, 2025. The event will take place at the Chambers Grant Salon, located in Denver, Colorado. This unique venue is nestled within the historic Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Surrounded by the original sandstone walls of the former Newton Auditorium, the space blends Colorado history with a modern atmosphere. With starry fiber optic ceilings, captivating artwork by local legend Vance Kirkland, and costumes from previous stage performances, it creates the perfect backdrop for a truly special evening. This special event supports the IAFE Education Foundation and its mission to advance and strengthen agricultural fairs, expositions, and shows through education, research, and charitable programs. The funds raised help support key initiatives like the Institute of Fair Management, a professional development program designed to equip fair staff and volunteers with essential skills needed to lead and innovate in areas such as marketing, operations, risk management, and more. Dress in your best with a western twist, and get ready for a night full of fun, fundraising, and a touch of Colorado’s timeless heritage. We can’t wait to see you there! Tickets and tables are available for purchase beginning July 1, 2025. All tickets must be purchased in advance, as onsite sales will not be offered. Pricing Options:

Fair Life on the Wild Side: Lessons from the Denver Zoo
Join us for an unforgettable field trip to the Denver Zoo, where the worlds of fairs and zoos overlap in some wildly unexpected ways. This educational experience brings together a panel of zoo professionals who, believe it or not, face many of the same challenges fair folks do — from digital ticketing and guest operations to event logistics, public safety, and even educational displays.
You'll hear how they manage it all “on the wild side,” with insights on everything from animal welfare to crowd control, conservation to concessions. Whether you're wrangling goats or juggling concerts and corn dogs, there’s plenty of crossover to explore and ideas to take home.
Get ready to think outside the barn and take a walk on the wilder side of fair management, you might just leave inspired (and maybe with a new favorite animal fact or two).
