Neuroimaging 101: MRI
This course will review and discuss the basic physics, theory, clinical application, and the most common uses of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the everyday, practicing optometrist. This course is intended to be an introductory course to MRI neuroimaging for optometrists who are wanting to get more comfortable ordering, reviewing/reading their own patients' MRI scans. The presenter's approach to MRI interpretation along with several real case examples are included to apply learned concepts. As the most common neurological disorders that optometrists typically manage are associated with cerebrovascular accidents, this course will mainly emphasize interpretation of MRI scans in patients with ocular findings secondary to stroke.

Retina OCT Workshop: How to Scan How to Interpret (Students)
Although over the past decade Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has become a workhorse in ocular disease detection and management, there are still deficiencies in understanding the maximum potential of this powerful diagnostic tool. This workshop will demonstrate the utilization of OCT for posterior segment disease and its application beyond just the macula and optic nerve assessment. A variety of scanning strategies will be used to demonstrate normal findings as opposed to the morphologic and physiologic effects of various pathologic conditions. Interpretation of the resulted images is a critical part of this workshop.

The Binocular Vision Eye Exam Explained Workshop (Paraoptometric Staff)
Despite being educated on the tools and testing needed to properly diagnose issues related to binocular vision, accommodation, and ocular motility, many primary care optometrists shy away from delving into these cases. When they do, much of the testing falls to the paraoptometric technician to complete. This workshop focuses on the appropriate testing needed for making a comprehensive diagnosis related to issues with binocular vision, accommodation, and ocular motility. Areas of concentration include cover test, suppression, reading eye movements, motor and sensory fusion, accommodative amplitudes and facility, and vergence. Attendees will experience the testing procedures in small groups. Our goal is to provide the tools needed and increase the comfort level of attendees in performing these assessments.

Neurodegenerative Disease: Uncovering the Ocular Connection
As our population ages, an increasing number of patients will be affected by neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. Researchers have identified the eye as an excellent, easily accessible source of potential biomarkers for early detection of these diseases. These research findings have hit the media markets for the general population and patients will be looking to their eye care providers to find out how this research relates to them. This course provides an overview of what has been discovered so far and what is in the research pipeline. It explores how we can use the current technology in our offices to help aid in the diagnosis and progression of neurodegenerative diseases and provides educational information that can be shared with patients.

Prescribing for a Preverbal Pediatric Population
**FL HAS DECLINED TO APPROVE THIS COURSE AS CEE/TQ**
Many primary care practitioners often question their ability to make prescribing decisions for our youngest patients. This course will walk through prescribing options for infants and toddlers using systematic analysis and case examples of hyperopic, myopic, and astigmatic refractive errors. Guidelines for amblyopia risk factors, considerations in prescribing based on age developmental milestones and associated conditions will be reviewed. Prevention and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia in regard to proper refractive correction will be stressed. You will be presented with both the science and art of optometric prescribing for young patients. Multiple methods of treatment including spectacle, contact lens, and occlusion methods will be reviewed. The number one goal of this course is to build the practitioners confidence in managing refractive error in their infant, toddler and adolescent patients. **FL HAS DECLINED TO APPROVE THIS COURSE AS CEE/TQ** Speaker(s): Valerie Kattouf, OD, FAAO, FCOVD

Inadequate Flow to Make the Eye Go: Ocular Ischemic Syndrome
Ocular Ischemic Syndrome (OIS) is an interesting condition and a diagnosis that is possible to overlook, as it can produce many ocular complications that mimic other diseases or produce signs and symptoms that are non-specific in nature. Ocular complications occur in a wide variety of structures including often subtle anterior segment findings, hallmark retinal presentations, and visual symptoms ranging from decreased central vision, to peripheral vision loss. While general serology may identify risk factors, it is only through ancillary vascular assessment of the carotid artery that the condition may be confirmed. Using a case example as a guide, the goal of this course is to review the various ocular presentations and systemic symptoms that may manifest associated with OIS and carotid artery disease, including a discussion of in office ancillary testing that may support a diagnosis of OIS. The course will also include a discussion regarding referral and follow-up management for patients diagnosed with the condition.

OCT Grand Rounds
This course will review and discuss several unique grand rounds cases in a live lecture format where optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used as the main diagnostic technology to make the appropriate diagnosis in these challenging case presentations. The purpose of this course will be to highlight the use of OCT in relatively new and/or unique ways to provide attendees with new insight on the use of OCT, in hopes of broadening the attendees' comfort level with using OCT outside the typical glaucoma and maculopathy clinical situations. Cases included in this course will mainly include neuro-optometry cases and retina cases. Attendees should leave this course with a broader view and use of OCT technology in their practices than they are potentially currently using.

Gene Therapy in Ocular Diseases
Gene therapy is a powerful treatment that can deliver new genetic materials to cells. Gene therapy can provide treatment options for inherited ocular diseases with limited treatment and alternative treatment options for non-inherited ocular conditions with effective treatment options but lack long-term efficacy such as exudative AMD. It is essential that optometrists are familiar with the most up-to-date information on ocular gene therapy to properly educate and provide alternative treatment options for patients with both inherited and non-inherited ocular diseases. This course will discuss the latest updates on gene therapy in inherited and non-inherited ocular diseases. After this course, participants will have better understanding of the mechanisms and implication of gene therapy in ocular diseases.

Technology in Vision Therapy
The use of technology in optometric vision therapy continues to evolve diagnostically, therapeutically, and with home reinforcement applications. New activities can incorporate virtual reality and eye tracking software integrate with principles common in vision therapy. Using these tools in addition to traditional free space learning can help facilitate greater patient compliance and improved treatment outcomes. This course will help ODs with treatment of patients suffering from amblyopia, strabismus, convergence/accommodative/ocular motor dysfunction, and visual information processing issues. While technology does not supplant the traditional equipment used, it can enhance the therapeutic gains and encourage patients to try their hardest.

The Many Faces of Stem Cell Deficiency
There are many different causes of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) and contact lens wear is certainly a major cause. Driving forces include trauma (surgical, contact lens wear), inflammation, infection, congenital anomalies, neoplastic changes and iatrogenic reasons. Fortunately we have several ways to effectively diagnose LSCD including careful slit lamp examinations, confocal microscopy, OCT, and impression cytology. Multiple treatment options are available such as surface restoration (steroids, cyclosporine), stem cell transplants, keratoprostheses, and synthetic/artificial corneas when severe disease develops.

To Refer or Not to Refer (To Neuro)? That is the Question
When working in a primary eye care setting, a great variety of conditions can present on a daily basis. It can sometimes be difficult to know when to refer a patient on to a specialist, outpatient work-up, or even to the emergency department. There can be a hesitancy to over-refer and cause the patient undue stress and anxiety, working against a fear of missing a significant, or even life-threatening finding. This case-based course demonstrates several patient scenarios and lets the participants determine what they would do in each situation. Then, a pivotal in-office test, sometimes common and sometimes less common, is presented, which helps to sway the pendulum towards either referral or observation of the patient. Participants are reminded that they have many tools at their disposal, which when used appropriately, can help them to determine how to best manage their patients.

How to Establish Specialty Care in a Day-To-Day Practice
Optometry students are exposed to a variety of optometric specialties during their academic careers. They may develop a passion for one or another of these types of practices. How do they reconcile that passion with the realities of the field when they enter practice? How can one develop a specialized practice over the years while remaining economically viable? What equipment/resources are needed to be successful in this type of practice? This conference will address all of these questions and attempt to define the optometric practice of the future.

How and When to Perform a Cranial Nerve Assessment
When a patient with a potential cranial nerve issue presents during a busy clinic day, it can cause major havoc to your schedule. Determining the cause and urgency of neuro-ophthalmic presentations can be difficult to discern in-office, but a quick cranial nerve assessment can help localize the lesion and determine the next step in treating the patient. This course will use a case-based approach to identify neuro-ophthalmic presentations and review practical in-office techniques for conducting a cranial nerve assessment.

Improving the Role of Paras in Exam Testing and Specialty Services
The role of para-optometric assistants is vital to the success of the office. This course will outline where and how Paras can help more in the office, exam and specialty services. They can do it all – if given the knowledge and tools to be more helpful. Communication is the most important skill that we need in order to build trust and confidence with our patients. Communication allows us to help our patients better understand the conditions we diagnose, their treatment plans and recommended protocols. It allows us to answer questions and ease their fears and frustrations. Being able to simplify explanations so our patients get it is the great gift you can give to your patients. In this course I will give you those simple explanations to help you communicate better with your patients. We will discuss topics from specialty services, optics, diseases, contact lenses and any questions you may have. Models, diagrams and drawings will be used to explain all.

Introduction to Scleral Contact Lens Fitting and Practice
Scleral lenses are the fastest growing segment of the gas permeable (GP) contact lens industry, and for good reason. From keratoconus to trauma to healthy eyes, sclerals are making a profound impact on our patients' quality of life. This course is for optometrists whose goal is to learn how to fit scleral contact lenses and grow their scleral lens practice. It will present information on patient recruitment, optimal patient flow, use of technology, optimal scleral lens fitting procedures, and how to troubleshoot the most common complications. It will discuss the latest scleral lens research and utilize patient cases to enhance clinical understanding.

When the Eye Pain is a Pain in the Neck
Non-specific eye pain with reading and computer use has increased dramatically since the onset of the pandemic and transition to remote learning and working from home. The most common etiology an optometrist will evaluate for is dry eye/ocular surface disease and oculomotor disorders like convergence insufficiency as the etiology of the patient's complaints. However, many of these patients have normal ocular health and binocular vision evaluations, and actually have an underlying neck problem. This course will review the pathophysiology of referred eye pain due to cervicogenic musculoskeletal/neuropathic etiology. It will provide primary care optometrists with the comprehensive knowledge of a cervicogenic evaluation from an orthopedic physical therapist, as well as screening examination techniques that can be implemented in the optometric exam room. It will also discuss ergonomic treatment recommendations and describe how different refractive prescriptions may exacerbate cervicogenic disorders using a case-based learning style.

Headache Differentials: A Multidisciplinary Approach
Headache is one of the most common symptoms that patients present with to healthcare providers. This course brings together three multi-disciplinary experts – a world-renown brain injury medicine physiatrist, a chronic pain and whiplash subspecialized physical therapist, and a neuro-optometrist for a panel discussion on the differential diagnosis of headache subtypes. These clinicians will opine specifically on the management of post-traumatic headaches – one of the most complicated and perplexing headaches to treat because of the multitude of headaches the patient may present with. With candor, practical advice and case presentations, they will enlighten the audience on presentation of different headache subtypes including but not limited to tension headache, cervicogenic headache, migraine, occipital neuralgia, dyssomnia, dysautonomia, and oculomotor driven headaches and ominous headaches to look out for like space-occupying lesions. Each provider will tackle the complaint from a different clinical perspective in both diagnosis and treatment considerations, providing the audience with a new view on headache management. Additional focus will be placed on what aspects of ocular health and oculomotor function need to be assessed, and how refractive prescriptions may influence these different headache subtypes.

Decoding Early Keratoconus: The New Management Paradigm
This one-hour course will review the pathophysiology of keratoconus (KC), and diagnostic methods used to diagnose the condition. Modern treatments at stage 1 or 2 can stabilize the cornea and improve the quality of life. Unfortunately, most clinicians are not trained to detect KC prior to stage 3 when both vision and corneal curvature are already significantly altered. Early signs and high- risk populations will be discussed using cases to illustrate management strategies. Contact lens and ocular surface disease management, referral for specialized corneal imaging, and long-term management of presbyopia and cataracts will be discussed.

You Can’t Grow what you Don’t Measure...Metrics Used to Grow a Practice 10X
It only took 27 years!!! We have managed to grow a $380,000 into what is headed to be a $3,600,000 practice in 2023. This course covers several 'watershed' moments when we had stagnated and needed to change things in order to grow again. While growing this amount, systems must also be in place to make sure growth and expenses are controlled. We will cover the history of how we did this so other practices may do this even faster!!!!

The Resurgence of Syphilis
Over the past several years the number of cases of syphilis has begun to rise. This has become more apparent since the onset of COVID in 2020. As a result of COVID, many patients skipped their regular wellness checks out of fear of contracting COVID, leading to an under diagnosis of syphilis cases and thus leading to an increase in the spread of STIs in general. We as optometrists can detect this in the eyes since many patients will seek out eye checks when disruptions in their vision occur. Specifically, a case series of Acute Syphilitic Posterior Placoid Chorioretinitis (ASPPC) will be discussed.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their Long-Term Impact on Systemic and Ocular Health
Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, is a term that was first used in a landmark study by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente and brought to the forefront by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, a pediatrician in San Francisco. ACEs include ten categories of stressful or traumatic events that include physical, abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. A number of studies have demonstrated that ACEs are exceedingly common, strongly correlated with poor childhood and adult health, mental health, and behavioral and social outcomes and demonstrates a pattern of high rates of intergenerational transmission. This course will discuss in detail the ACE categories, how these experiences manifest and affect one's systemic health generally and ocular health specifically, and what optometrists can do to screen for ACEs in their practice.

Glaucoma Gauntlet: Managing Cases From Diagnosis to Treatment
Glaucoma's chronic progressive nature necessitates pairing and leveraging multiple treatments with a goal of buying years of non-progression. Eye care providers are currently armed with topical medications, drug delivery, laser surgeries, and intraocular surgeries to treat intraocular pressure and ultimately glaucoma. Using patient cases, this lecture will challenge attendees to work through the glaucoma diagnostics, decide on treatment necessity, and ultimately select the treatment modality. Peer-reviewed evidence will be reviewed with an emphasis on how this research guides our day-to-day care for glaucoma patients.

Addressing Mental Health in the Classroom
Optometric Educators have an amazing opportunity to help mentor and advise our future colleagues throughout their time in a program. Not all paths through optometry school are smooth and faculty often play a supportive role in various ways. In addition, faculty have their own pressure and concerns, which can feel overwhelming. This interactive forum for Optometric Educators is designed to discuss the many mental health challenges that we face, how to discuss these, references that can be made, and ways to help our students (and each other) deal with the mental health challenges that we face on a daily basis. The goal is that you walk away knowing that you are not alone and that you may have new tools in how to identify areas of concern and recommendations for these areas.

How to Incorporate Allergy Testing in an Optometric Practice
According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four adults have seasonal allergies that can affect the eyes. Importantly, allergic conjunctivitis (AC), one of the most common ocular allergies, affects up to 30% of the general population, with symptoms of allergies adversely affecting eye health. Many of these patients present to their optometrist with symptoms that mimic other ocular diseases. To get to the root cause and provide personalized care, optometrists can offer in-office allergy testing. In diagnosing and treating our patients, allergy testing is a helpful tool that often gets overlooked. This course will provide the clinical, practical and safety information that clinicians need to get started.

Imaging AMD: A Show and Tell of Biomarkers
For the last two decades, we have learned how to use imaging technologies particularly optical coherence tomography for the detection of wet or neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The attention to this detail was critical as there is an effective treatment for nAMD. However, we have neglected to some extent to assess features of dry or atrophic AMD. With potential treatments in the foreseeable future, it is imperative that we start looking for imaging features for a better assessment of the staging and prognosis of AMD.
