The Urgent Need for a STEM Workforce
The United States stands at a critical crossroad, to either build a stronger foundation for workers so that they can gain the technical skills needed for an evolving world, or risk losing the strength and edge of our high-tech sector workforce and their corresponding influence on the economy. As Latinos make up the second largest population group in the country, it is with urgency that a focus on the preparation of this young student population becomes a national priority as the number of Latino students enrolled in STEM majors and completing STEM degrees fall behind other student subgroups. This opening plenary will provide a data update on the academic status of Latinos from elementary to post-secondary education.

STEM Foundation Blocks: Math and Science Standards
In order to understand and solve many of the problems and opportunities that lay in the modern world, students must build a strong foundation in math and science. However, school districts across the country have witnessed a drop in proficiency scores in their state and local assessments within these two subject areas. States and school districts have also experienced various changes to the math and science standards that have been taught to students over the years. School boards and education policymakers play a unique role in how these standards are implemented to support student proficiency and impart the necessary knowledge students require to be academically successful. This session will provide an overview of the current landscape of math and science standards.

Expanding the STEM Model: Deeper Integration of Computer Science in K-12 Education Systems
In preparing students for a world that is increasingly driven by technology, computing and generative artificial intelligence (AI), governing boards and educational leaders across the country have an opportunity to expand the traditional STEM model in their school districts by including computer science offerings. This session will share leadership and administrative perspectives on how to integrate math and engineering subject matter by offering computer science courses in school districts. Experts will focus on funding such programs so that there is more access to these courses, as well as best practices in the recruitment and support of educators and practitioners who are leading these efforts.

Understanding Student Barriers & Supports in STEM Education
Understanding why some students do well in school, more specifically in math and science, while other students struggle is important for school board members to study and address. This session will highlight promising case studies for how school districts can support students who may be disengaged and struggling academically and offer possible solutions and strategies to encourage Latino students to pursue STEM majors and careers.

Importance of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM)
Research indicates that two key indicators for student learning and success lie in providing students with high-quality teachers and high-quality instructional materials. However, many local school districts have outdated curriculum, and many educators lack access to high-quality instructional materials that support student learning. This problem is even more acute in school districts that serve predominantly low socioeconomic student populations and multilingual learners. This session will provide an overview of leading and innovative STEM instructional materials used across the country that have transformed how educators teach STEM subjects in the K-12 continuum and have correspondingly proven to engage and inspire students to pursue STEM majors and careers.

STEM P3 Partnerships: Workforce Development Pathways & Opportunities
Building a future diverse STEM workforce will require states, regions, and communities to form collaborative partnerships and efforts that will involve not only government agencies, but non-profit organizations, the business community, and institutions of higher education. It is through these efforts that the nation will work towards building a sustainable pipeline of STEM employees. This session will review top industry highlights and will provide an overview of best practices for how to integrate STEM education with workforce development opportunities where students are able to meaningfully engage with employers and community partners to build the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for the workforce.
