1:15 PM - 1:45 PM    SSO Diversity Featured Lecture: Centering on the Margins: Strategies for Ensuring Health Equity in Uncertain Times
Achieving health equity in surgical oncology requires a deliberate commitment to addressing the systemic barriers that historically marginalized communities face in accessing quality care. Structural inequities in healthcare funding and resource allocation disproportionately disadvantage underserved populations, perpetuating cycles of poor health outcomes. To break these cycles, healthcare institutions must intentionally shift their focus toward meeting the specific needs of these communities, implementing targeted interventions that ensure equitable access to timely, high-quality surgical care. Through intentional and sustained efforts, healthcare systems can move beyond rhetoric to meaningful action, ensuring that marginalized communities are no longer left behind.

We will propose a value-based framework that will facilitate lasting change through a fundamental recentering of policies, financial incentives, and institutional priorities to focus on those most affected by disparities. By proactively investing in equitable healthcare strategies that center on the margins, institutions can dismantle long-standing barriers and establish a system where every patient, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or geographic location, receives the highest standard of surgical oncology care.
