2024 Planning/Environmental Track Highlights

We are excited to see everyone at the 2024 Airport Planning, Design and Construction Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 5-7. We have worked hard to plan engaging and valuable sessions to help us prepare for the future of aviation. Our industry is on the verge of a shift in technologies that will make aviation more accessible. Planning is critical to successfully implement advanced air mobility, sustainability and resiliency measures, and capital projects at airports of all sizes. Improving how we plan, fund, and manage airport surroundings (by safeguarding approaches and promoting compatible land uses) benefits both the airport's financial success and operational effectiveness. Finally, it's crucial to consider environmental impacts, as recent updates and changes in guidance and regulations can potentially affect projects. The objective of our sessions is to help airports and their consultants better understand the ever-changing planning and environmental landscape, so they can plan and prepare for project scoping and implementation.

As your host and co-host, we are pleased to announce the following topics in this year’s agenda:

Do Airports Dream of Electric Planes?

Are you planning for electric aircraft at your airport? From Master Planning and ALP incorporation, to environmental considerations, local/state approvals, airspace and Part 139 certification, this session will examine the steps needed for UAS/AAM facilities to become operational at an airport. The session will also include a discussion on the different types of facilities required for the different types of projected electric aircraft, including needs for short takeoff and landing capabilities and vertical takeoff and land facilities.

Fly Towards the Future - Airport Capital and Facility Planning

Identifying projects and securing funding for Airport Capital Expenditures requires a systematic approach for collaboration among stakeholders. Find out what input to seek, options for funding sources, and how to understand O&M/replacement costs and strategies. Funding options and financial planning considerations will also be discussed.

Runways to Real Estate

Compatible land use around airports is critical to protecting the airport's interests. The ability to control adjacent uses to airports makes management of obstructions more effective and incompatible uses less likely to affect future projects. Airports and communities can benefit from uses that complement airports and potentially provide revenue. Also, vegetation continues to become a growing obstruction problem around airports. Controlling vegetation can be challenging, but ACRP is releasing a new publication to help airports address this topic. Join us to learn proactive approaches for collaborating with the airport's surrounding communities to ensure smooth airport operations.

Moving to a Greener Future

Join us in this session to hear what airports are doing to meet the goals of the US Aviation Climate Action Plan and the move to Net Zero by 2050. Get ready to discuss sustainability goals, resiliency at airports, incorporation of low emission vehicles, and planning for eligible items.

Environmental & Planning Hot Topics

In this engaging session, subject matter experts will discuss how to navigate the ever-changing NEPA and Permitting landscape, FAA 1050.1F Desk Reference updates, Clean Water Act rulings, and updates to the advisory circulars such as Runway Length. This will be an interactive session with dialogue between the panelists and questions from the audience. Find out how the recent updates may affect your projects moving forward.

On behalf of AAAE and ACC, and the 2024 Planning/Environmental Track, we look forward to seeing you in March!
